A delegation from the part Cypriot heritage group met with the Head of the European Commission’s Representation in South Cyprus, Myrto Zambarta, and conveyed the difficulties that Turkish Cypriots face in obtaining citizenship.
During the meeting, it was explained that Cypriot children born from marriages, of only one-sided Republic of Cyprus citizenship, are left stateless and that their human rights are being violated.
It was also emphasized that this was in violation of citizenship laws and discrimination.
It was stated that the issue was causing problems such as freedom of travel and the right to education. The problem also affects Turkish Cypriot pregnant women, who are EU citizens as they have to give birth to their child in a foreign country.
The delegation informed Zambarta about the cases that have been experienced for many years, adding that the court cases have been left inconclusive.
