The first phase of the Morphou WWTP extension project completed

The first phase of the works to extend Morphou Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) has been completed. The project is implementing by UNDP and it’s funded by European Union.

According to the UNDP press release, the second phase of the Morphou Wastewater Treatment Plant is expected to be completed by the end of June 2023.

The statement continues as follows:
“By then, the capacity of the WWTP will be doubled, making it possible to treat more than 2,500 m³ of wastewater per day, which covers the needs of more than 20,000 people. The project ensures a wastewater treatment in line with the European Union standards, and allows people to stop using septic tanks. Moreover, treated water and sludge will be used for irrigation and fertiliser.

The European Union also funded the construction of a water reservoir for the treated wastewater as well as almost 3 kilometers of dedicated irrigation pipeline. The treated wastewater is successfully used by farmers for agricultural purposes, saving money, water and energy.”
