MFA “Maria’s candidacy considered objectionable on substantial grounds”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the objection of one of Kormacit residents’ candidacy, Maronite origin Maria Skoullou.
Statement: Maria Skoullou’s candidacy was considered objectionable on substantial grounds.
The ministry statement said:
“As it is known representatives of the Maronite community residing in our country are not TRNC citizens. On the basis of the special status granted to them by the TRNC government and the opportunities created by this, their involvement in local government elections can only be carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
We see that a deliberate deception campaign is being performed following the rejection of Greek Cypriot citizen Maria Skoullou’s candidacy.
It should be noted that the rejection of the above-mentioned candidate was not because she is a Maronite, as a matter of fact, all of the other mukhtar and member candidates are Maronite and Greek Cypriot citizens. There were no opposing matters related to these people.
As a result, the candidacy of Maria Skoullou was evaluated as objectionable on substantial grounds and by law has been granted under the authority of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. With respect, this information has been shared with the public”
