The Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı announced that three airline companies have applied for flights from Türkiye to the Turkish Republic of Northern (TRNC) in March ahead of the tourism season.
Speaking to the Anadolu Agency (AA), Arıklı said that North Cyprus is an attractive route for airline companies, and that trial flights will start in March at the new terminal of Ercan Airport.
Stating that the new construction of Ercan Airport has been physically completed and they are trying to complete the technical deficiencies, Arıklı noted that the airport will serve a capacity of 10 million passengers per year.
Stating that Russian citizens living in South Cyprus were unable to fly to their countries from the South, Arıklı said that initiatives would be taken to fly Russian citizens living in South Cyprus to their countries from Ercan Airport. Likewise, this will be an opportunity for their relatives visiting from Russia as they will be able to fly via Ercan airport.
Currently, three companies are carrying out scheduled flights from various cities from Türkiye to North Cyprus.
With the three new applications submitted to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, the number of airline companies operating scheduled flights from Türkiye to Lefkoşa will increase to six as of March, Arıklı said.
