The Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar issued a statement to the press following his meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides in the buffer zone.
“I reiterated that we will only take part in official talks on Cyprus talks with the acceptance of our sovereign equality”, Tatar is cited as saying.
Pointing out that they are now carrying out a new policy on Cyprus with the support of Türkiye, “He knows very well what has taken place in the last 50 years” Tatar said.
“This meeting was social, not a formal meeting. During this informal meeting, we expressed good wishes and departed,” Tatar said, adding that they focused on possible cooperation opportunities for the future and for the benefit of the two peoples, he said. “Everyone has responsibilities towards their society and people. In the long run, we all want to reach a consensus in Cyprus,” Tatar added.
Noting that they discussed the earthquake issue with Christodoulides, Tatar said, “We talked about how we can cooperate in such a situation, God forbid, in such a case there is no place for politics. A step can be taken in this regard,” he said.
Tatar said that Christodoulides was optimistic about the proposal put forward regarding the earthquake issue adding that a separate arrangement could be made for this purpose.
