NC Statistical Institute: The population is approximately 391 thousand

The North Cyprus Statistical Institute published a population and demographic bulletin covering the years 1977-2021.
The Institution’s bulletin provides information on population and population structure, birth statistics and fertility, mortality statistics and death, causes of death, marriage and divorce. The bulletin has been prepared using data from the Statistical Yearbook and Economic and Social Indicators published since 1977.

Population 390 thousand 745

The population of the country, determined at 286 thousand 257 in the population census on December 4, 2011, was calculated at 390 thousand 745 according to the 2021 year-end projection.

The male population is 54.4% and the female population is 45.6%
Population pyramids were also included in the bulletin. The gender distribution has been revealed illustrating that the female/male ratios in the total population were close to each other (female 50.4% male 49.6% in 1995), and after the first comprehensive census in 1996, the difference between gender distributions began to change.
According to the 1996 census, the gender distribution was 52.8% male and 47.2% female, while the 2006 census was 54.0% male and 46.0% female.
The total population continued to increase in the following years demonstrating an increase higher for men than for women.
According to the projection population for 2021, the male ratio of the population was calculated as 54.4%, the female ratio as 45.6% and the gender ratio as 119.2 (calculated as the number of males per 100 females).
Ageing Population
Examining the distribution of wide age groups in the total population, the ratio of the population in the “0-14 age group” decreased from 29.5% to 13.7% in 2021 compared to 1978, and the “15-64 age group”, called the working age population increased from 60.9% to 76.5%.
Significant increase in infant mortality
A significant increase has been recorded in Infant Mortality Rates in the past three years. While 8 babies died before reaching the age of one (0 years old) in 2019, it was seen that this number reached 26 in 2021.
The Infant Mortality Rate increased from 2.1 to 7.2 (per thousand) in the same years. It was observed that the highest infant mortality was in the Neonatal (0-27 days) period when periodically examined.
Longer life expectancy
Longer life expectancy has increased according to the estimates in the life data tables created after the 2011 Census, illustrating that in 2021 the life expectancy has reached 83.1 years for women and 79 years for men.
It has been determined that the total number of deaths has increased over the years and that the number of deaths for men is higher than for women, following examinations of the number of deaths by gender.
Cardiovascular diseases are the first Causes of Death Statistics…in the last 3 years.
Following the examination of the causes of death, old age was given as the reason for deaths from 1996-2005. Although the causes of death due to Symptoms, Symptoms and Abnormal Clinical and Laboratory Findings, in which deaths are grouped, are higher than the causes of death due to Circulatory System Diseases, it was observed that deaths due to Circulatory System Diseases were generally the primary cause of death in the country.
According to the records of the causes of death in the last 3 years, cardiovascular diseases etc were highest in 2021. The cause of death due to the circulatory system ranked first with 46.4%.
While deaths from Neoplasms, including cancer-related deaths, took second place with 12.3%, it was seen that Certain Infectious and Parasitic Diseases took third place with 11%, with an increase in deaths due to Covid19 in recent years.
Divorces increased
It was observed that the number of marriages of individuals showed a fluctuating change over the years, but remained in similar intervals, while the number of divorces followed a significant increase over the years.
While the number of marriages was around 1200 in both 1977 and 2021, the number of divorces, which was 180 in 1977, increased by approximately 5 times to 895 in 2021.
