Turkish Cypriot Member of the Committee on Missing Persons Hakkı Müftüzade criticised the Greek Cypriot Administration’s declaration of October 29 as the “Day of Missing Persons” in Cyprus and reminded that the issue of missing persons is not open to political abuse.
In an interview with BRT Television, Müftüzade asserted that the earlier agreement on missing persons, which was adhered to by committee members had been broken by the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA).
Stating that while the committee avoided political abuse, Southern Cyprus did not, Müftüzade said that three members make contacts at the UN Headquarters every year, but GCA reflects this in a biassed way.
Noting that the Committee on Missing Persons has a duty to build confidence, Müftüzade stated that the issue of declaring October 29 as the Day of Missing Persons in Cyprus will be discussed at the committee’s next meeting.
