The Road Safety Law that was published in the official gazette has been enforced. According to the new law enforced on road safety, If the officer suspects that a driver is under the influence of drugs they have the right to carry out a saliva test that detects the presence of drugs. It is a violation for an individual to reject a saliva screening test. If necessary following the first analysis test, a biological sample can also be requested for laboratory analysis.
The law says that any individual driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be fined or will receive up to two years imprisonment.
Evaluating the Road Safety Law to the Cyprus Turkish News Agency (TAK), the Head of the Traffic Accidents Prevention Association Zeki Avcı said that they had been waiting 10 years for this draft law to be passed. It’s too late, Avcı said adding that now they expect the technical preparations to be completed and for the law to be implemented as soon as possible.
