Bayrak Radio Television Corporation (BRTK) Director Meryem Çavuşoğlu Özkurt who was found guilty on June 7th and imprisoned at the Central Prison for 2 months for violating the election bans was released this morning.
“I will continue with my life, I believe I am not being blamed for anything else….” were the words expressed by Özkurt on her release from prison this morning. Everyone is entitled to an independent judiciary, she was not upset with anyone and that she just carried out her duties, Özkurt said.
Özkurt was tried by the Lefkoşa District Court for violating the Election and Referendum Law and not complying with the warning by the High Electoral Council.
Özkurt was found guilty for two cases filed against her, two months for the first case and 20 days for the second case. The court ordered that she serve both sentences together.
Although her lawyer filed an appeal following the ruling, the Supreme Court did not change the ruling against her.
