Asian tiger mosquito detected in Girne

Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), an invasive species, was detected in one of the adult mosquito traps set up in the Girne region in December 2022.
The morphological examination was performed under a stereo microscope, and the species-specific-characteristic distinctive features were photographed and recorded. Although the struggle and necessary measures against mosquitoes are meticulously continuing, by the Basic Health Services Department teams of the Ministry of Health, especially in the area where mosquitoes are seen the participation of the public is required.
Aedes can multiply and thrive in small puddles, therefore it is very important to identify the breeding and living areas of the insects in our own home, garden, or balconies and take simple precautions. The holders under the pots, the ornamental pools, or the water we leave for animals are the easiest breeding grounds for these mosquitoes. All that needs to be done is for the water to be changed once a week.
The Basic Health Services Department of the Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance that citizens pay attention to avoid the formation of mosquito breeding grounds by emptying tanks and similar containers filled with water due to rain.
