“Greek Cypriot does not have the right to comment on the UN’s deployment on the territory of the TRNC”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Greek Cypriot Administration does not have the right to comment on the United Nations’ deployment on the territory of the TRNC.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised the Spokesperson of the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the draft agreement submitted to the UN about the deployment of the UN in the TRNC.

In the statement, it was noted that the language of the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Greek Cypriot Administration was “detached from the facts” and stated that “It is useful to note that in the relations between the TRNC and the UN, the Greek Administration, which represents only the Greek Cypriots, does not have the right to comment.”

The statement reads:

“The TRNC has recorded on every occasion, both verbally and in writing, that the UN Peacekeeping Force can continue its existence and activities in our country because of our goodwill and that a legal regulation is needed for its presence and activities in our country. Despite all our calls and needs, the UN has so far refrained from taking any steps in this regard. During his visit to New York in September 2022, Foreign Minister Ertuğruloğlu stated that they had taken a proactive step and submitted a constructive draft agreement to the UN Secretariat and that they were waiting for the UN’s views on this draft within a reasonable time. We have always valued and will continue to value our relations with the UN and the UN Peacekeeping Force. However, it should be underlined that the UN can carry out its activities in a country within the framework of an agreement with that country. It is our priority to reach an agreement acceptable to both parties. If an agreement cannot be reached, the TRNC reserves its rights.”
