The Supreme Election Board (YSK) announced the unofficial results of the TRNC local elections.
Some 208,236 eligible voters cast their votes at 768 ballot boxes across the TRNC to choose 18 mayoral seats and 964 candidates, 220 council seats, 240 muhtar, and 960 village elders.
Today’s election –the 13th local election since 1976—was the first held after a law was approved to merge several municipalities, reducing their number from 28 to 18.
The general turnout was around 64.68 percent — higher than the previous general elections held on January 23, 2022. The turnout was around 60 percent in the 2022 general elections.
In the capital, Social Democratic Party (TDP) incumbent Mehmet Harmancı secured 49.44 percent of the votes to win a third term in office, compared to 26.41 percent for CTP’s Sıla Usar and 22.50 percent for UBP candidate Sadık Gardiyanoğlu, according to unofficial results announced by YSK.
CTP’s Süleyman Uluçay secured 49.55 percent of votes in Gazimağusa defeating UBP challenger Erdal Özcenk who got 39.98 percent of votes.
In Girne, CTP’s Murat Şenkul secured 34.30 percent of the votes compared to 32.34 percent for independent candidate Nidai Güngördü and 31.66 percent for TDP’s Zeki Çeler.
In Gönyeli-Alayköy, UBP’s Hüseyin Amcaoğlu secured a comfortable election gaining 62.23 percent of the votes compared to 37.77 percent for CTP’s incumbent Ahmet Yalçın Benli.
In Güzelyurt, Mahmut Özçınar, of the UBP, secured 44.29 percent of the votes to win a seventh term in office, defeating CTP challenger Osman Bican (35.54 percent) and independent Reşat Kansoy (20.17 percent).
Fırat Ataser secured a comfortable election in Lapta-Alsancak-Çamlıbel gaining 46.91 percent of the votes compared to 29.13 percent of independent challenger Fuat Namsoy and 15.39 percent of CTP’s Emre Efendi.
In Çatalköy-Esentepe, CTP’s Ceyhun Kırok secured 36.16 percent of the votes defeating independent Mehmet Hulusioğlu who picked up 34.77 percent.
CTP’s Aziz Kaya preserved his position with 50.37 percent of the votes in Lefke compared to 46.70 percent for UBP challenger Adil Özgey and 2.93 percent for independent Adnan Eraslan.
In İskele, UBP’s Hasan Sadıkoğlu secured a comfortable election gaining 65.42 percent of votes compared to 34.58 percent for independent Mehmet Şenol.
CTP’s Yüksel Çelebi secured re-election in Dikmen gaining 53.50 percent of the votes compared to 45.41 percent of votes for UBP’s Niyazi Öztürk.
In Değirmenlik-Akıncılar, CTP’s Ali Karavezirler secured 56.16 percent of the votes defeating UBP challenger Ebru Törehan (42.26 percent).
UBP’s Fatma Çimen Tuğlu secured election gaining 45.14 percent of votes in Mehmetçik-Büyükkonuk compared to 41.21 percent for CTP challenger Cemil Sarıçizmenli and 13.65 percent for independent Mehmet Çelebi.
CTP’s Ahmet Latif secured election in Mesarya gaining, 41.65 percent of votes.
In Geçitkale-Serdarlı, UBP’s Halil Kasım secured 57.32 percent of the votes defeating CTP challenger Hasan Öztaş (42.68).
In Tatlısu, DP’s Hayri Orçan secured a comfortable re-election, gaining 53.00 percent of votes compared to 36.66 percent of votes for independent Orhan Bebek and 10,34 percent for independent Mehmet Ali Özdemir.
Katip Demir secured election in Yeniboğaziçi by securing 42.32 percent of votes.
In Beyarmudu, independent candidate Bülent Bebek secured 42.85 percent of the votes compared to 41.78 percent of UBP’s İlker Edip.
In Erenköy-Karpaz, UBP’s Hamit Bakırcı secured a comfortable election with 46.05 percent of the votes defeating CTP challenger Suphi Çoşkun (26.67 percent).
