Greek Cypriot students are preferring North Cyprus low-rent accommodation

Greek Cypriot students studying at universities in the South, are choosing to rent accommodation in North Cyprus, especially in the Metehan region (Agios Dometios) close to the border crossing, due to high rental prices in the South.

Phileleftheros and other newspapers report that the housing problems experienced by university students in South Cyprus were taken up during an Assembly Education Committee’s meeting yesterday. The issue of Greek Cypriot students preferring to rent in North Cyprus was also discussed.
MP Alekos Trifonidis who visited some Greek Cypriot students renting in North Cyprus received information that they were paying around 170 Euros for a one-bedroom and between 200-220 Euros for a two-bedroom housing.

Trifonidis who met with four to five Greek Cypriot students residing in the “Agios Dometios” (Metehan) region, said that he received information that around 50 Greek Cypriot students were living in the same region. Trifonidis stated that GC university students who reside in mountainous areas or other far villages in South Cyprus are choosing this method for renting accommodation.
