Finance Minister Sunat Atun who is carrying out contacts in the Turkish capital Ankara gave the news that two 25 megawatt generators from Türkiye are expected to become operational in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) by the beginning of July 2022.
Finance Minister Atun issued a written statement following his meetings with the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez and Governor of Türkiye’s Central Bank Şahap Kavcıoğlu in Ankara on Wednesday.
Stating that he had a very positive and beneficial meeting with the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez, Atun said “During discussions with Minister Dönmez we held talks on ways of permanently solving the electricity problem being experienced in the TRNC. In line with these discussions, we set forth on the agreement signed in December between the Turkish Energy Ministry and the Cyprus Turkish Electric Authority (KIB-TEK) for two generators to be allocated. The loading operation of these two generators, with a total power of 50 megawatts, has begun. The two generators will be sent from the Ambarlı port to the TRNC on Saturday, June 18th and are expected to arrive by June 24th or the 25th 2022. The aim is to have both generators up and running as soon as possible so that both generators will be active by the beginning of July 2022. With the debts to AKSA being configured and the problem being solved we will come to the point of meeting the electricity requirement of the public in the TRNC with the arrival of the two generators”, he added.
Atun also pointed to the importance of ensuring the supply of fuel oil, the most basic element for electricity generation. Minister Atun advised to keep away from problems that can put the market at risk and danger, such as circulating discussions that KIB-TEK could or could not fulfil its needed fuel supply or the vessel has or has not arrived to the TRNC. Fuel oil will now be available from the TPIC of the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources with a state-to-state model following the change in the legislation, Atun said. This will enable both our security of supply and also ensure the stability of electricity costs, he said.
