Tourists seriously injured in buggy accident

One of the two tourists who were injured in a buggy accident in Cape Greco on Monday was transported in critical condition to the Nicosia general hospital.

Famagusta police spokesman Steve Theodoulou said the 31-year-old man suffered a brain bleed among other injuries and had to be intubated and transported from the Famagusta general hospital to the capital’s state hospital.

He appears to have been the one driving the buggy.

The accident occurred around 1pm, when the tourists, aged 22 and 31, both Iraqi nationals who have been living in Sweden, allegedly lost control of the vehicle and fell into a ten-metre ravine.

The younger man remains hospitalised in the high dependency unit in Famagusta. He has multiple injuries and fractures on his shoulder, ribs and lung.

He is in serious condition but out of danger, the spokesman said.

The exact conditions of the accident are being investigated by the police.

The tourists had arrived on the island on August 4 and were expected to depart this Thursday.
