The grave of Sarı Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa, inspired in Barış Manço’s song has been restored

The loved and inspired song of famous Turkish singer Barış Manço, Sarı Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa whose grave is in the Göçeri village of Cyprus is being renovated. The grave is to be renovated under the chairmanship of the Lions Sema Tibukoğlu Club and in collaboration with the Mare Monte Inıtiatives, Association, Merit International Hotels, the Dikmen Municipality, and the Rota Reklam.

The grave was renovated by Barış Manço in 1982.

It is stated that Sari Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa, who was originally from Karaman, came to Cyprus from Anatolia along with his five brothers. Sari Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa who was given 3 thousand acres of land for cultivation, was known for his wealth and kindness at the time.

It was stated that Sari Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa was known for making peace between people that had an argument, he arranged marriages between single people, provided them with furniture, gave them a house, and donated at least one acre of land. Sari Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa didn’t let the poor pay the bill when they went to a coffee shop, tavern, or restaurant. He would always put the bill in his own name.

It is among the well-known rumors that he was rich at heart and always spent his money on paying the bills of others. Even though he was not in poverty, he died without money.

Barış Manço, who came to Cyprus for a concert in the 1970s, heard about Sari Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa from Turkish Cypriots. Barış Manço then wrote a song based on the stories of Sarı Çizmeli Mehmet Ağa.

In 1982, Manço met with Sarı Çizmeli’s relatives in the Göçeri village.
