The Republic Assembly’s Administration, Public and Health Affairs Committee meeting which began yesterday at 11:00 am was completed at 04:30 this morning. The Committee unanimously approved the “(Special) Law on the Unification of Municipalities”, of which the municipalities were against.
While the draft being discussed with the participation of the Prime Minister and some ministers, and sent to the Parliaments General Assembly, protests that began last night by municipalities and municipal employees are continuing. The road in front of the Parliament building in the capital Lefkoşa is closed to traffic due to the protest. Police are on duty to ensure the flow of traffic from different routes.
Meanwhile, Head of the Municipal Worker’s Union (BES) Mustafa Yalınkaya emphasized the importance of the Law on Municipalities No. 51/95. Yalınkaya announced that the protest outside of the parliament had ended for today and that the blockade of vehicles had been moved. “We will do what ever necessary to have the 51/95 Law on Municipalies implemented” Yalınkaya said.
