The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the discovery of a new natural gas field in block 6 in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of South Cyprus. In the statement, it is said that the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people are being usurped by the Greek Cypriot administration following activities carried out by Eni-Total Consortium in block 6. The statement reminded that the cooperation proposals for hydrocarbon resources by the Turkish Cypriot side and Türkiye's proposal to organize a regional Eastern Mediterranean Conference with the participation of all relevant actors remained valid.
The statement continues as follows: “As long as the Greek Cypriot administration, which does not hesitate to take steps that increase tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, continues to usurp the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, we will continue together with motherland Türkiye to take the necessary measures to protect our legitimate rights and interests. The Greek Cypriot Administration does not represent the Turkish Cypriot People and does not have the right to make decisions on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot People. In this context, we would like to remind any companies, countries and the entire international community that may be involved in these activities that any unilateral activities of the island under the so-called "Republic of Cyprus" regarding the maritime jurisdiction areas are illegal”
