Girne Mayor Şenkul “Our buildings are intact except for a few”

The Mayor of Girne Murat Şenkul who made statements following the panic that escalated in the country following the earthquake disaster in Türkiye, reassured the public, stating that Girne is safe.

“There is no need to panic”

Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul in a written statement said that following warnings by experts of a possible earthquake in Cyprus said that this has caused serious concern for citizens in the region. “As well as, not needing to panic, we should also not ignore the situation” he added. Şenkul stated that after the disaster, the Girne Municipality received many messages and phone calls and referred to the two main concerns of citizens.

“The northern coastline has a very solid ground”

Şenkul said that Girne which is located on the northern coastline of the country is on very solid ground and is extremely resistant to a possible earthquake, except for a few areas. Pointing to the importance of the ground during an earthquake, Şenkul underlined that people should feel safe in that sense.

Noting that another issue that citizens are worried about is the buildings being safe, Şenkul noted that apart from a few buildings, the structures in the Girne region are safe and that an action plan has been put into practice regarding buildings in doubt.

Expressing that all public buildings in the region and buildings that are not considered safe will be subjected to tests within the scope of the action plan, Şenkul added that these procedures will be carried out within the framework of cooperation with universities in the region and the Chamber of the Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects.
