Europe Day 2017 celebrated in Nicosia

European Commission celebrated the Europe Day at the Selimiye Square in Nicosia on May the 20th, Saturday between 10am and 2pm.
The Europe Day event which is celebrated in 28 European Union member countries by 500 million people, included stands of the projects supported by the EU Aid programme, concers, dance shows and children’s corner.
The mayor of Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mehmet Harmancı and the head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus George Markopouliotis gave speech at the event. Markopouliotis said that his wish which is shared by the European Parliament and the European Commission is to celebrate the Europe Day next year in a united Cyprus.
Harmancı stated that he agrees with Mr. Markopouliotis’ wish and that there is a bigger need for the support coming from the community solidarity at this stage of the negotiations more than yesterday for peace and solution in Cyprus.
The stands set up for the event included EU Commission’s technical support projects and grantees from the private sector and civil society organizations that have been implementing EU funded projects.
The EU Infopoint, one of the European Comission’s technical assistance projects for the Turkish Cypriot community aiming to bring the Turkish Cypriot community closer to the EU, organized the Europe Day event.
On the children’s corner, the children were involved a painting activity about nature, face painting, science shows and puppet show 'Exploring Europe'.
The Europe Day which has been celebrated in the Selimiye Square in Nicosia for the Turkish Cypriot community for the last three years will be taking place also in Famagusta on the 10th of June this year.
