Ertuğruloğlu “UN parameters are the guarantee of non-solution”

Voice Kıbrıs Haber
Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu stated that the call made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for an "independent Cyprus" at the UN General Assembly is a very positive development. "The fact that a leader like President Erdoğan made such a call in an environment like the UN General Assembly has pleased us significantly," Ertuğruloğlu said.
Foreign Minister Ertuğruloğlu evaluated his contacts in New York, within the scope of the UN General Assembly and his visit to Washington.
Stating that the only path to a solution to the Cyprus problem was the acceptance of the equal status of both sides, Ertuğruloğlu warned that, “as long as one side is observed as a state and the other as a community; Cyprus will remain a problem on the agenda of the international community".
“Under these conditions, never mind holding talks for 50 years even if talks continued for 500 years, the negotiations process will never be successful”, he said.
Reminding of the 1960 Republic of Cyprus status, Ertuğruloğlu noted that the Turkish Cypriot people had embraced the RoC, but that the Greek Cypriot side did not believe or trust it and wanted to be rid of it, at the most appropriate time, this was realized with the 186 UN Security Council Resolution in 1964. It was stated that the Cyprus problem could not be resolved through negotiations under the UN umbrella. This is a very important point, he said.
Stating that for years the “UN parameters” have been brought up, Minister Ertuğruloğlu said that these UN parameters were the source of a non-solution to the Cyprus problem. It is a UN Security Council decision, he said.
Referring to the nonexistent partnership state and government, Ertuğruloğlu said that with the UN article 186 soldiers called Peacekeeping Forces were deployed to the island leaving the problem unresolved.
Stating that those who created the Cyprus problem are the 5 permanent members of the UNSC and that these countries have different interests in the region, Ertuğruloğlu said, “We should not have any expectations in the UNSC. We see once again how right President Erdogan's statement is, 'The world is bigger than 5' ” he said.
