2-month jail sentence for BRT Director Özkurt

Voice Kıbrıs Haber
Bayrak Radio Television Corporation (BRTK) Director Meryem Çavuşoğlu Özkurt has been sentenced to two months in prison on grounds that she did not comply with the restrictions during the election and public voting ban.
The High Electoral Council (YSK) had called for the halt of broadcasting on the Geçitköy and fenced-off city of Maraş in October 2020, as it coincided with the election bans; however, Özkurt continued broadcasting and did not comply with the High Electoral Council’s warning.
BRTK Director Meryem Çavuşoğlu Özkurt pleaded guilty to the charges made against her by the Lefkoşa District Court Judge Mine Ozankaya.
Judge Ozankaya said that Özkurt had acted contrary to the High Electoral Council (YSK) and called on those working in the public sector to abide by the law.
