Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu said that it is worrying to hear that the United Kingdom (UK) has chosen to establish strategic cooperation with South Cyprus on defence and foreign policy issues.
Ertuğruloğlu issued a statement on the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the UK and South Cyprus on the establishment of a “Strategic Cooperation”.
“It has been learned that a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of “Strategic Cooperation” was signed between the United Kingdom and the Greek Cypriot Administration of South Cyprus. It is worrying that the UK, which is one of the guarantor countries of Cyprus, is seeking to establish strategic cooperation with the Greek Cypriot Administration, including defence and foreign policy issues. It is also clear that this agreement is contrary to the 1960 Treaties that established a balance between the island of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. I would like to emphasize that this agreement will not bear any consequences for the TRNC”, Ertuğruloğlu is cited as saying.
