“Animal producers condemn butchers’ statement”

The Animal Producers and Breeders Association reacted to statements issued by the Cyprus Turkish Butchers Association yesterday, arguing that the claims were unfounded.
Responding to the accusations in a press statement, the Board of Directors of the Animal Producers and Breeders Association voiced their strong condemnation on the issue stating that the accusations of the butchers were treacherous and malicious.
The General Secretary of the Animal Producers and Breeders Association Adil Onalt in a statement pointed to the latest records of the Veterinary Department regarding the claims that there were no animals. “Data shows that there are enough animals in the country” Onalt said. At the moment, there is no need for meat, and added that butchers were playing games on the issue.
Onalt blamed butchers for being disrespectful as they were buying animals from producers and not paying. This in turn was causing problems for animal producers as they were protesting that they were unable to buy animals.
Referring to the claims put forward that animal producers were increasing prices; Onalt said that this did not reflect the truth adding that the prices were stable and transparent.

Noting that there was a great price difference between supermarkets and butchers, Onalt said that it was the government’s duty to inspect the price difference. The public is calling for inspections to take place but unfortunately it is not known which authority is responsible on this issue, Onalt said.

Smuggled meat is being brought in to the country by those who are calling us smugglers; he said adding that, there is no need to import meat to the country at the moment.
“If there is no meat in the country, this issue is to be discussed with the animal producers’ association and only with their approval can meat be imported” Onalt said adding that even if meat is brought in from abroad, it will still be expensive for the public. Onalt reminded that there is a world crisis and that there is also a shortage of meat in the world and in South Cyprus.
Responding to claims that animal producers are smuggling illegal meat, Onalt said that they were even having difficulties feeding their own animals. Onalt warned that if the government allows meat imports, then the animal producers will take action.
